Murray-Calloway
County Hospital

The $62 million Murray-Calloway County Hospital (MCCH) expansion project is near completion. MCCH’s Administration, Board of Trustees, and employees are inviting the public to see the new addition at the Grand Opening, Sunday, March 21, 2010, with a ceremony to begin at 2 pm in the new South Tower located off Vine Street. Guests at the Open House will be able to walk through and see first-hand all the new facility has to offer. Immediately following the ceremony will be a ribbon cutting, with hors d’oeuvres being served after the ribbon cutting. Take-home commemorative gifts will be available while supplies last.

Community tours and free health screenings will be offered on Saturday, March 20, 2010, from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm. The tours are open to anyone throughout the region to explore behind the scenes of our new state-of-the-art South Tower medical facility. We are currently taking reservations for the tours in order to plan accordingly for our guests. The free health screenings will be provided by Murray-Calloway County Hospital, and will include blood pressure, blood sugar, DermaScan, osteoporosis, and more. The health screenings will take place in the new main lobby of the South Tower on Vine Street.

This five-story, 158,000 square-foot South Tower will connect to the current hospital on the 2nd

Floor to allow for easy patient transfer.  Patients and visitors will be greeted in the new main entrance leading into a lobby area with a two-story atrium creating a primary entrance into the hospital. Centralized registration will make it easier for guests to find their way and increase efficiency in the registration process.

The main floor will also house Radiology, a new ER, and Cardiopulmonary. The Radiology Department will offer a new state-of-the-art MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and high-tech diagnostic imaging equipment throughout.

One of the key highlights of the South Tower is its Emergency Department, which features thirteen rooms, increased from eight at the current facility, which will allow patients to be treated more efficiently and decrease wait times.

Another highlight is the new Pathology and Surgery Department located on the 2nd Floor. To create more capacity for the surgeons of Murray Hospital who operate on patients throughout our region, the hospital has expanded the number of operating suites from six to eight. The new surgical floor also includes a new outpatient surgical area, pre-operative, and recovery areas. The surgical floor was designed specifically with patient privacy and comfort in mind. The expansive new waiting area allows plenty of space for family members to wait, and has a section designed specifically for kids.

The 3rd Floor will offer a state-of-the-art Critical Care Unit and Progressive Care Unit. The two units can move from one to another as they transition their levels of care and progress allowing for efficient patient care. There will be customized built-in lifts for bariatric patients, and both the critical care and progressive care units are increasing from eight rooms to ten rooms.

In addition, the South Tower was created to offer private rooms on floors 4 and 5 in a soothing and relaxing atmosphere for patients and guests. In fact, when the South Tower opens, every patient room throughout the hospital will be transitioned to private rooms.

Keith Bailey, CEO, said that the hospital staff, board, and administration are proud of the new facility. “We are excited for the public to see the new addition. This expansion is a direct result of the continued support we receive from the community. We want to thank them for helping us achieve this milestone.”

Murray-Calloway County Hospital is a 152-bed licensed acute care facility that has served Murray and its surrounding communities since 1910. A service of Western Kentucky, the hospital is home to over 70 physicians. Murray Hospital is known for its orthopedic surgery, emergency care and nationally accredited cancer center.

This is not the first expansion the hospital has seen since it was founding. Originally built in 1910 as Mason Memorial Hospital, it was renamed Murray-Calloway County Hospital in 1964. In 1979, the hospital completed an $8.3 Million project that consisted of three phases. Today, the hospital continues to grow into a regional healthcare facility in which every citizen in our region can take great pride.

The new South Tower will provide Murray-Calloway County Hospital with opportunities for growth, helping to meet strategic goals, attract more physicians and staff, meet demands for faster, more convenient healthcare, and add new technology and additional services.
